ABSTRACT

The present article differs from most of its companion studies in this volume in its focus on oral representations of music in one of the world's most important old high cultures. 'India', in this context, refers to the common heritage of all the modern states of the Indian subcontinent: Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. I define musical imagery as mental activity (including all its interpretations and descriptions) that arises in response to music as heard, remembered, or imagined.
