ABSTRACT

I have been asked to write an epilogue for the present volume in my capacity as a Nepali person writing from Nepal on the overall theme of the book. The focus of the book is on nation-building and ethnicity. The contributions deal, very broadly, with the following four areas: (1) state formation and nation-building efforts since Nepal’s unification in 1768-9; (2) the upsurge in ethnicity and ethnic identity among the various linguistic and regional minorities; (3) some broad trends of socio-cultural change; (4) the implications of Hinduization in a multi-ethnic state, which, according to its Constitution, is still the world’s only Hindu kingdom.
