ABSTRACT
In August 1990 Cuba entered into a “special period in times of peace.” This term references the indefinite period of economic hardship during which resources must be conserved. The special period is the immediate consequence of the breakup of socialism in Eastern Europe, economic difficulties and political unrest within the former Soviet Union, and the more general worldwide economic crisis. The effect of these changes on daily life in Cuba has been devastating.
