ABSTRACT
Communication is about language. How teachers explain ideas, how learners understand them is highly dependent on language. One of the factors in communication is, obviously, vocabulary. In maths, another key communication factor is the use of symbols, such as and , which introduces another layer, the need to relate symbols to vocabulary and to concepts.
