ABSTRACT
This chapter reviews non-state firearm control and asks two closely related questions: How do communities control firearms possession and use? And under what conditions is such control effective? 1 Given the topic, I shall draw extensively on ethnographical literature and social interpretation. Much of the material is anecdotal, but it will allow the creation of a rough typology, in which the mechanisms employed, their limits, and the dynamics of change are discussed.
