ABSTRACT
The long evolutionaryprocess by which the older and more fundamental forms of behavior were produced cannot be directly observed. From what is known about the structural changes that have taken place during the adaptation of animals to their environment, it is safe to draw some inferences with regard to the processes which produced from time to time in the course of animal life variations in behavior and corresponding variations in structure.
