ABSTRACT

The sphere of usefulness of the bamboo in the economic existence of the Japanese is so extensive that a mere enumeration of its uses would occupy a couple of pages. This task, however, we are not going to perform: it has already been ably accomplished by Prof. Chamberlain in his famous “Things Japanese”. As the plant enter so largely into the life of the Japanese people, information other than that given in the well-known publication will not be out of place in these pages.
