ABSTRACT

The genteel accomplishment of kōdō, or incense ceremonies, is now coming into vogue, incense parties being occasionally given in elite society. Briefly described, kōdō consists in burning incense and enjoying the fragrant perfume with elaborate attendant ceremonies similar to tea ceremonials. This was a favourite pastime of the aristocracy in ancient times, but later it went out of practice, and now again it is finding its votaries among the ladies and gentlemen of leisure and taste.
