ABSTRACT
Between Delta blacks and the realization of their goal of economic as well as political independence, lay the determination of the region’s planters, who throughout the upheaval of war, emancipation, and Reconstruction fought to regain their political, racial, and economic dominance and, insofar as possible, recapture the dream of a Delta where the planter’s power was absolute and his wealth unrestricted.
