ABSTRACT

Children's use of libraries remains high, and the newer libraries are becoming increasingly popular as meeting and study places for young people and students. It is a matter of some debate as to whether the children's library should be seen as a place apart, self-contained and with its own safeguarding and child protection protocols, or more integrated with the adult library. It is also a matter of contention as to whether it should have its own design code — often colourful and imbued with fairytale imagery — or whether it should share the same design palette as the rest of the library, avoiding charges of infantilisation.
