ABSTRACT

Elliot Eisner has put into writing a number of things which need to be said – not necessarily because they are truth, although truths are contained therein, but because he is expressing points of view on which other serious scholars take differing points of view. The issues involved are important in educational development; the beliefs on all sides (not two sides) are held firmly; and the open forum of professional journals is an excellent place for discussion. Let us hope that discussion may lead to better definition of terms; to clearer delineation of issues; and, therefore, to techniques and studies which encourage the weighing together of judgements based upon empirical data and pronouncements based upon personal experiences, assumptions and values whenever curriculum development is the concern.
