ABSTRACT

TRANSLATION OF A LETTER TO THE PRESENT WRITER

FROM A TEACHER IN GERMANY.

Herr has addressed to me your request to communicate to you what I know on the subject of pacifist literature in primary instruction. I gather from this tha t it would be of little advantage to you if I pointed out certain extracts of pacifist character taken from two or three books whose content gives evidence elsewhere of the tendency toward militarism and revanche, I assume tha t what you wish to learn is whether there exists a literature which cultivates conscientiously the pacifist idea and which shows a pronounced tendency in this direction in order to conform with the constitution of the German Empire, which ordains an “ education in the spirit of international conciliation.” My knowledge is not sufficiently extensive to report for all of Germany. But Berlin being the culminating point of all pedagogical efforts, it may be taken for granted tha t the opinion which I express here would apply to the greater par t of the Empire.
