ABSTRACT

Analyzing schooling by means of the analogy of drama remains an exercise in speculation or philosophy unless it is empirically grounded in at least some of the activity that takes place in schools. Can one actually see students rehearsing, teachers coaching, principals directing, people following various scripts? What does improvisation actually look like in a school setting? What are some examples of ways schools form character? Do we ever see teachers coaching youngsters in the drama of living?
