Glutamate and aspartate are the major CNS excitatory transmitters with glutamate by far the most predominant. Most of the major sensory pathways and some motor pathways are glutamatergic (Table 1). All pyramidal cells in the cerebral cortex and granule cells in the cerebellar cortex release glutamate.
