ABSTRACT

In June 2010, just 10 years after the first draft of the human genome was announced, the Wellcome Trust in the UK launched a project to sequence 10 000 human genomes in the next 3 years! This so-called UK10K project will seek to identify rare genetic variants that are important in human genetic disease by focusing on the gene-containing regions of these genomes (so-called ‘exomes’). The pace of technological change is breathtaking; it took 10 years to sequence just one genome and will now take just 3 years to sequence 10 000 genomes.
