ABSTRACT

There are two areas of parental liaison for consideration, each of them concerned with a rather specialised activity requiring great commitment by teacher, parent or both. Because of the tenor of that dedication and because of their more formalised nature, rather than because of any intrinsic similarity, they are discussed together in this chapter. They are parent committees and parent management or governance and parents’ rooms, and it is intended to offer some comments concerning each. The initiative usually comes from the school, either to establish some form of committee or association, or to obey the authority’s directive to arrange the appointment of a manager or governor. Most allow the parents to decorate the room and choose fittings, curtains and furnishing, and they are used for meetings of one kind or another, and also on a regular basis for groups or even classes in various subjects.
