ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how Arabic idioms contribute to the content and structure of their texts. It contains two major sections. The fi rst section looks at the discursive functions that idioms perform both in terms of what typical functions may be linked to different idioms and how contextual factors might affect this linkage in actual use. The second section concentrates on the major ways in which idioms contribute to the cohesion of their texts.
