ABSTRACT
Much applied linguistic research focuses on texts. This chapter begins by explaining what texts are, and how the concept of ‘text’ relates to the equally important concept of ‘discourse’ in applied linguistics. We then consider why texts and discourses are of such interest and importance in applied linguistics, before looking in detail at two contrasting examples of text analysis research in action.
