ABSTRACT

According to some observers, the new evangelical movement, because it is accompanying the global dissemination of American products and Western values, substantiates the idea that Protestantism can propel economic development. That is, it can help usher in modern industrial capitalism. According to one scenario, Protestantism and capitalism might now combine to create a bright era of material prosperity and democratic institutions, 1 thus following the pattern that was played out successfully in England, Northern Europe, and the United States.
