ABSTRACT

Since the end of World War II, there have been a total of 231 armed conflicts active in 151 locations throughout the world.2 During the seventeen years since the end of the Cold War, the corresponding numbers are 121 conflicts in eightyone locations. The annual numbers of conflicts in this period – by intensity and by type – are given in Tables 11.1 and 11.2 respectively. Figure 11.1 shows the trend in armed conflict by type back to 1946.
