ABSTRACT

On June 27–29, 1990, a group of Israelis and Palestinians met under top-secret circumstances at the remote conference facility outside Stockholm. Although planned to be clandestine, the meeting created major headlines in Swedish and international media. In fact, the meeting was part of Swedish “quiet” diplomacy for a peace dialogue in the Middle East. It was probably the first time a Swedish academic department demonstrated its value in a sensitive diplomatic operation. It could have resulted in a sustained peace process, well before the Oslo Process became the designated main track in Israeli–Palestinian diplomacy during the 1990s. This is the first time that this episode has been described in English and thus available for a larger audience.
