ABSTRACT

Introduction Originally an idea proposed by theYouth SportTrust and developed by the Routes into Languages consortium in the West Midlands in partnership with a local school, The German Orienteering Festival is an innovative way to combine language learning with an outdoor activity. The aim is to devise a marked course with a number of control points between which students must navigate in order to complete it in the fastest time – all whilst working together in the target language.Languages and PE departments can work together to organise and deliver the project. It is suitable not only for language learners of all abilities, but also for those of different ages, with older students providing support by acting as Language Leaders (see Part IV,Project 3).Here we outline the preparation and delivery of the activity and include such materials as sample maps, clue examples, core vocabulary, a classroom game, a comprehension task and a sample reporter’s interview. The accompanying DVD also includes the following additional materials: clues for higher-and lower-ability groups, a blank grid for maps, a sample marker sheet, a themed quiz and certificate templates.
