ABSTRACT

Handball is in some ways the perfect sport to introduce in the context of a modern foreign language.Whilst relatively unknown in the UK, the sport is immensely popular in Spain, which immediately presents a welcome aspect of intercultural awareness. Originally an idea proposed by theYouth Sport Trust (see list of useful websites on the accompanying DVD), it was developed into the project presented here by Routes East at Anglia Ruskin University by Rhys Bearder and Sarah Schechter.Routes East has been awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark for all its Language & Sport events, including this one. As your students are unlikely to have played handball before, it is easy for everyone to get involved, regardless of ability. The session naturally focuses on using the new vocabulary and simply having fun without getting too tied up in the rules and technicalities of the game itself! To set the scene in your classroom, the Royal Spanish Handball Federation has some interesting photographs in its photo gallery (see useful internet sites on the accompanying DVD).
