ABSTRACT

As the title of this project suggests, this activity concentrates on languages in the workplace. It aims to provide students with tangible links between language lessons and the language skills that are increasingly sought by employers. It also seeks to highlight the large number of careers that require language skills, of which many students can be unaware. Also promoted during these activities are employers’ needs for language skills across a wide range, from basic competence to advanced ability – thus dispelling the myth that you need to be fluent in another language for it to be useful. Other common misconceptions among students can also be explored and hopefully reconsidered, such as the belief that British employers do not need staff with language skills (Watts, 2004) and the conviction that other subjects are far more important in terms of career options (Graham, 2004).
