ABSTRACT

Die Mauer was developed by: the University of Hull; the Goethe Institut Manchester; Routes into LanguagesYorkshire andThe Humber; Links into LanguagesYorkshire and The Humber. The project itself focuses on the BerlinWall as a symbol of the ideological differences between communist/socialist East Germany and the capitalistWest. Its main aim was to appeal, through inspiring resources, to teachers and students studying A-level German. The materials developed focus on the Berlin Wall (the twentieth anniversary of its fall) and the repercussions of the ideological differences that existed in that period of history. The resources presented here are suitable for use by teachers in secondary schools, sixth-form colleges and other teaching establishments. The resources themselves seek to tap into relevant issues around politics and citizenship, as well as language progression, to provide an interesting and unusual platform for learning. The project involved collaboration with the Drama Department which was the original inspiration for the development of the language and culture resource pack. The approach to the topic is imaginative and fun and uses individual experiences of historical events, whilst the interdisciplinarity of the resource makes it attractive for collaboration across subject areas (for example, drama, history, citizenship).
