ABSTRACT

Successful CPD inspires and helps us to be even better teachers. It shares best practice, gives us practical and immediately applicable ideas for our classrooms and reinvigorates our energy, confidence and desire to improve the language-learning opportunities we provide for our students. This Part considers the role of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in the language teacher’s professional practice and explores a variety of different opportunities open to you. Its format is thus slightly different to the others, as it considers key questions to be asked regarding the role of CPD and helps you to set up your own training opportunities. This chapter is all about how you can get involved in providing both small and large-scale CPD opportunities for yourself and your colleagues and is based on real experiences at Hove Park School and Language College in Brighton. It outlines how you can step outside the normal ‘cascade’ opportunities in Foreign Languages departments to run your own workshops and your own conference. A range of support materials are included on the accompanying DVD to support your Continuing Professional Development: a sample planning sheet for setting up your CPD; a sample running order of an appropriate workshop, sample evaluation forms and a picture gallery of the actual Airport event delivered to students.
