ABSTRACT

In this chapter we focus on the range of teaching skills and strategies needed to develop effective classroom practice and enhance children's learning. Of the many teaching skills that teachers have to master, it is planning and the production of lesson plans that are among those of greatest importance yet, in some respects, hardest to master. Issues relating to differentiation, individual learning needs, body language and adult–pupil interaction, notably the use of questions, are also considered in depth. The various practices for teaching reading and spelling are presented as key issues for every primary teacher, especially those who work with younger pupils.
