ABSTRACT

Trainee teachers whose greatest concern is exercising class discipline should be reassured that most children enjoy school, behave sensibly for the majority of the time and want to have a positive relationship with adults and other pupils. This chapter explores a range of issues associated with children's behaviour and the strategies available for ensuring that the teaching and learning process is not hindered by the struggle to maintain order. A variety of discipline strategies are offered for consideration but these are underpinned by an acknowledgement that behind every settled classroom is a lot of hard work by the teacher in establishing and maintaining positive relationships, generating work that motivates the children and enforcing an agreed behaviour policy.
