ABSTRACT

The content of this chapter introduces a range of issues that are expanded in later chapters, but primarily examines aspects that relate to the person of the teacher. A starting point is that the teacher's role is of supreme importance in determining the quality of children's education, so much so that Richards (2009) describes the teacher as ‘a frighteningly significant person whose teaching helps to shape attitudes to learning at a most sensitive period in children's development’ (p. 20). Whatever else might be claimed about teachers, they are never forgotten by their pupils, as even elderly people will relate incidents from their schooldays that have remained in their minds and hearts throughout life. The positive impact of a good, caring teacher on children's wellbeing cannot be under-estimated; unfortunately, the impact of a poor, negative teacher can be equally devastating. The content of this chapter will help to ensure that you are remembered for all the right reasons.
