ABSTRACT
Among the many fables attributed to Aesop, the Greek sage from antiquity, is one about a fox encountering a boar sharpening his tusks against a tree The fox inquires why the boar sharpens his tusk when neither hunter nor hound is nearby to pose a threat The boar replies that it would be ill-advised for him to sharpen his weapons at the very moment that he ought to be using them (Pinkney, 2000) The fable of the boar and the fox illustrates in broad brushstrokes the guiding theme of this chapter Successful advancement through life—even survival—demands that people not only adapt to existing demands but also anticipate and prepare for demands that may emerge in the future.
