ABSTRACT
In November 2004, the murder of Theo van Gogh in the streets of Amsterdam by a young Moroccan shook national and global media and politics. Theo van Gogh had become a contested public figure in the Netherlands because he was very critical of Dutch multicultural society, both in his written work as a journalist and as a documentary and film producer. During the trial, the accused Mohammed Bouyeri admitted to ruthlessly killing van Gogh and emphasised that he had acted out of his Islamic faith.
