The mathematics of calculation As discussed in Chapter 2, understandings of number and of counting are essential for the development of calculation strategies (Thompson 1997c) and children need to understand the relationship between numbers before working on more structured calculation. These relationships include comparison, ordering and partitioning and are important concepts which will help their subsequent understanding of calculation and place value (tens and units).
