ABSTRACT

During the 1990s, controversies over ethics and values attracted major public attention. The general public increasingly questioned the ethical practices of those in the professions and focused directly on ethical and value issues in the political process generally and in the actions of politicians specifically. Educators increasingly were questioned about their role and responsibility for teaching values and instilling both ethical awareness and practices. Often, teachers came under fire for their choice of textbooks, assigned or optional; for their treatment of students; and for particular values they endorsed and exemplified or failed to endorse or exemplify.
