ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I focus on the positioning of the young men participating in my study as it continued when they entered new phases of life. My argument is that while they finished education, moved into a working life, had children and undertook financial obligations, the legacy of apartheid became more apparent. Therefore, I chose to call the chapter ‘Continuities’ instead of ‘Discontinuities’ even though many of the participants surprised me by changing their life circumstances for better or worse when I met them in 2017. The continuities I  encountered were related to White privileges that continued making life easier for White participants who could rely on the financial stability of their parents. They were related to the continuous struggle to avoid violence and to get education and jobs experienced by Black and Coloured participants staying in the townships. They were related to the continuous racism experienced by Black and Coloured participants living and working in the suburbs.
