ABSTRACT

The purposes of this chapter are threefold. First, it examines the philosophical foundations of proto-norms, that is, fundamental moral norms that undergird the ethics of the mass media in developing nations. Second, it argues that classical moral theories, as global universals, are relevant to the continuing search for improved news coverage and analyses in international communications. Third, it proposes a preliminary model for ethical communications about developing nations in the international mass media and for cross-cultural communications within such nations.
