ABSTRACT

Rhetorical discourse is planned, public behavior, properties secured through the functioning of the Plans module. We have already suggested that Plans in rhetoric are a module in the design space, a particular abstraction on object structures that allows them to be viewed in a particular way, as constructed publics. But we have yet to be very specific or detailed about the status of publics and how they matter to plans. In this chapter, we describe in more detail the characteristics of publics, their relationship to the Plans module, and the generic plans that can be derived from this module. Because Plans are a subtle and often hidden aspect of the seamless discourse of rhetoric we experience, it is best to start from the outmost layer of rhetorical design, as presentation, and work our way into Plans.
