ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of formal logic in the analysis of fallacies and illustrates the main background of the substantial contribution to the study of the fallacies made by the Canadian logicians John Woods and Douglas Walton. Its broader object is to judge whether, or to what extent, a logical system is capable of throwing the fallacies into sharp and systematic focus. This question is part of an even broader one: Are formal logics good theories of natural language argumentation?
