ABSTRACT

The studies to be reported in Part III of this book began in January of 1985 under a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education to the WARRANT Project at Carnegie Mellon University. For this project, Preston Covey of the Philosophy Department had promised to use case-based reasoning to develop software support for a curriculum in philosophical ethics. From the English Department, David Kaufer brought his perspective on rhetorical theory and argumentation, Christine M. Neuwirth brought her training in computer science and composition, and I brought my interest in reading and writing. In the first half of this chapter, I outline the original design for the data gathering effort we completed in 1985–1986. In the second half, I preview the general framework that guided the subsequent analyses.
