ABSTRACT

Simon Callow was born in London in 1949. Callow made his London debut in a fringe production of Schippel. His theatre work includes The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, the title role in Adrian Noble’s production of Titus Andronicus at the Bristol Old Vic, Mary Barnes at the Royal Court, David Hare’s production of Total Eclipse, Edward Bond’s Restoration, The Relapse, Melancholy Jacques, Kiss o f the Spiderwoman, The Importance of Being Oscar and Chimes at Midnight For the National Theatre, Callow has played the title role in Amadeus, Orlando in As You Like It, Stafford in Alan Ayckborn’s Sisterly Feeling, and Face in The Alchemist, which originated at the Birmingham Rep. He has also directed a number of productions, amongst them The Infernal Machine, Cosi Fan Tutte, Single Spies (co-directed with Alan Bennett for the National), Shirley Valentine, Die Fledermaus, Carmen Jones (for which he won an Olivier Award for Best Director of a Musical), The Destiny o f Me, Les Enfants du Paradis for the RSC, Snoo Wilson’s HRH and The Pajama Game.
