ABSTRACT

It has been about 15 years since I originally wrote the paper reprinted here as chapter 22. And it is easier to see now than it was then certain lines of thinking about human communication within anthropology and other disciplines that this paper is a part of and to which it hopefully contributes. In this epilogue I trace some of those developments, in part to provide a present-day context for this paper, but also to suggest that we are in fact getting somewhere in the social scientific study of communication (i.e., there is such a thing as progress and development in this area).
