ABSTRACT
Although it is often difficult to extract much meaning from the specific charges that Pope Gregory IX made against Emperor Frederick II in the bull of excommunication of March 1239, at least one of them is so obscure as to be almost opaque. The fifth item of the bull states, “We excommunicate and anathematize him because in the Kingdom churches consecrated to the Lord are destroyed and profaned.” 1
