ABSTRACT

In order to determine the influence of postmodernism on the evolution of organizational theory and practice, certain aspects of postmodernism are selected for discussion. These will be applied critically for the purpose of challenging the traditional premises which underpin organizational discourses. In essence, postmodernism rejects the idea that an ultimate truth is possible and that the world as experienced is as a result of hidden structures. The attempt at discovering such an order is seen as both naïve and erroneous. However, the need for an organizational truth has had a significant influence on organizational theories, resulting in the creation of a fad industry of management and organizational gurus, promoting quick-fixes to organizational ills. A postmodern critique of organizational and management theories challenges the positivistic scientific approach and the need for prediction and control.
