ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines items that are needed beyond the prizes themselves. Then, it describes specific issues related to how to start prize cabinet and maintain prize inventories. In terms of patient-specific issues, the chapter also outlines how to talk with eligible patients about participating in Contingency Management (CM) program, how to explain non-participation to ineligible patients, and how to address common staff concerns. If a patient selects five small prizes in one day, or between two and three different CM sessions, they can choose something more valuable rather than five smalls. Ideally, the clinician should check numbers of prize slips at least monthly. The supervisor should also conduct at least quarterly audits (and as frequently as weekly during initial stages of CM implementation to quickly correct any problems) of the purchasing protocol. However, in order for patients to respond positively, the CM program must be designed in a manner consistent with behavioral principles and implemented with appropriate adherence and competence.
