ABSTRACT

This chapter provides case examples of patients and providers who have experienced Contingency Management (CM) protocols that were integrated among only a portion of clinic patients. It includes a brief quiz to assess whether the readers should be designing a CM program for a subset of patients or for their entire clinic population. The chapter describes rationales for selecting different types of patients with whom to integrate CM. It discusses the pros and cons of integrating CM on an individual basis with patients versus a group-based approach. An approach that many clinicians use once they have become familiar with CM is to alter the behavior being reinforced or the target population over time so different groups of patients get a chance to experience and benefit from CM. The chapter specifies potential behaviors for reinforcement and decided upon the number of patients with whom it is best to administer CM.
