ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author describes tools to monitor and ensure appropriate administration of Contingency Management (CM). She outlines these tools for use in CM protocols that reinforce abstinence, and then describes parallel forms and processes for CM protocols that reinforce group attendance. During initial CM protocol implementation, the author found that therapists make errors with over 35% of patients. Therefore, monitoring tracking forms for adherence is critical for appropriate CM implementation. Adherence refers to the delivery of an intervention in the intended manner. To ensure that CM is delivered as intended, the clinician should create checklists for each CM session. After concordance in rating is established and they are administering CM with an adequate or better degree of competence on all 12 indices, the clinician and their supervisor need not rate every session. Once competence is established, the clinician can continue to record every session, but randomly select just one or two tapes per week for formal rating.
