ABSTRACT

This chapter initially describes issues and how and why they are critical to keep in mind when designing a Contingency Management (CM) program. It also describes considerations related to selecting behaviors for CM programs. Designing a CM intervention to alter behaviors concurrently is going to be much more challenging than developing a CM intervention to address one of the behaviors. Objective determination refers to clear and indisputable ascertainment of the occurrence or absence of a behavior. The therapists could decide that in order for Mike’s behavior to be considered acceptable he must make some contribution to the group, and it must not be negative in nature. The middle column has space to list potential methods of determining the occurrence of each behavior. In deciding upon the best behaviors to target for CM interventions, practicality or feasibility must also be considered. Try rating the sample behaviors at top of the chart in terms of practicality and feasibility in the readers own setting.
