ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to encapsulate the history of Traditional Ethnography in both anthropology and nursing, by reviewing the development of ethnography in Anthropology, followed by a discussion of the basic requirements of a Traditional Ethnography. The third section discusses the introduction of Traditional Ethnography to nursing, while the fourth describes some of the misunderstanding found in the nursing literature about ethnography. A brief review of some of the nursing publications in the past 20 years reporting on Traditional Ethnography is followed by a comment on the future of Traditional Ethnography in nursing.
