ABSTRACT

The title of this chapter is provocatively phrased in its reference to “Science.” A review of this nature must take into account the vexed and even turbulent relationship that qualitative research methodologies have held with concepts of “Science” given that positivistic strongholds in nursing research and the overarching medical model impact not only on nursing research but on nursing as a profession. In our review of qualitative nursing research in England, Wales and Scotland we will, therefore, deconstruct popularly held concepts of Science when assessing its ‘state’ with regard to qualitative nursing research.
