ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the stages will be detached from history and will be applied to other curriculum areas. English/language arts is important to the child's educational development because it is the curriculum subject most centrally concerned with the development of those imaginative projections which are fundamental to adequate development of the capacities of the mythic stage. It is worth noting that the same introductory point made above about English/language arts applies equally well to foreign languages. Romantic and philosophic interests in science are often resisted because they seem focused on immature sensationalism or wild-eyed generalizing, but when these impulses are controlled by a developed ironic intelligence they are important constituents of a mature and flexible scientific understanding. Student teachers are usually offered characterizations of psychological development and also a logical sequence in which the knowledge of their particular curriculum area may be organized.
