ABSTRACT

The concept special has significance within all children’s lives, be they from religious or non-religious backgrounds. The idea that certain objects, times, places, people and books are treasured or revered and treated in out-of-the-ordinary ways provides a foundation on which to build later enquiries into holy or sacred at Key Stage 2. This unit of work explores the concept of special exclusively in relation to books in order to focus and clarify the children’s learning and avoid overwhelming them with information.
